Engaging Indigenous communities through financial advice

We’ve partnered with Jason Timor, Managing Director of Stonecrab, a leading Indigenous engagement consultancy firm, to create ‘Engaging Indigenous Communities through Financial Advice’, a webinar available through TAL Risk Academy.

Jason is a proud Badu/Waiben Island man from the Torres Strait Islands who has provided Indigenous engagement consultancy services for some of the largest organisations in Australia.

As a financial adviser, you will work with people from many different backgrounds, with a wide spectrum of financial knowledge and needs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples occupy a unique place in Australian society—but for many non-Indigenous Australians, the challenges they face are still poorly understood. This is not entirely surprising—just 30% of non-Indigenous people say they’re knowledgeable about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, while only 17% regularly interact with an Indigenous community1.

We want to help you develop a richer understanding of the needs of Indigenous clients and communities, and provide you with respectful, culturally sensitive engagement strategies so you can help empower them to protect their financial future.

This begins with an understanding of some of the historical and socio-economic factors impacting Indigenous communities. The ongoing effects of colonisation, intergenerational trauma and systemic disadvantage have resulted in a significant disparity in outcomes between Indigenous and other Australians.

This NAIDOC Week (6-13 July), we want to help close the knowledge gap as we celebrate one of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth.

In this webinar, Jason explains some of the unique financial challenges and opportunities facing indigenous peoples in Australia and provides you with the knowledge and tools to build trust, deliver culturally sensitive advice, address complex needs and promote sustainable financial well-being.
