Why a health check is important for men and women

The biggest perks of owning your own business is being your own boss and taking control of all aspects of the business. However, we all know that despite our best intentions, things don’t always go to plan – like an unexpected health issue.

While your clients are important and a healthy cash flow is critical to a thriving business, they’re not the most important assets within the business. I believe the far most important thing to take care of, for the sake of the business, is you.

As a business owner, it may be hard to find time to take a regular health check. You might always make trivial excuses like, “work is too busy” or “I have more important things to do”. However, a routine health check can actually be a life saver: any health issues can be detected and treated long before it becomes a serious problem. You’ll also be reducing any potential healthcare costs and recovery time if you have an issue that’s treated sooner.

Remember, your business needs you to keep the engine running. But, if your health becomes an issue, it needs to be dealt with quickly and properly to avoid unnecessary extended time off which could just slow the business in its tracks. Good health begins with prevention.

If you’re in your 30s and 40s, some health checks to consider include blood pressure, cholesterol, testes self-checks (men), breast self-checks (women), Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment, mammogram (women) and Cardiovascular Risk Assessment.

If you’re in your 50s and 60s, you’ll need to do the same checks as in your 40s, plus a bowel cancer screening, Osteoporosis Risk Assessment, as well as visual and hearing impairment test.

Even if you do come out with a clean bill of health, a regular yearly health check should be part of your plan for living a longer, healthier life. Regular health checks will also give you peace of mind and the chance to build a relationship with a doctor that you can trust.

Looking after your health is the most important thing you can do. There could be serious implications for your personal life and business if you aren’t giving your health the attention it needs. It’s also worth reviewing your health cover annually to see if you’re making the most of the coverage you’re paying for. Having the right coverage can greatly relieve the financial burden of unexpected healthcare expenses and again, peace of mind.
